Ravens fans everywhere were bursting with excitement during the 2022 NFL Draft. This year, the Ravens managed to secure six picks in the fourth round of the draft. Some new and exciting prospects will be good for the team morale due to the amount of players lost last year. College Athlete Suicide

 Last year, you could find James Madison University’s catcher, Lauren Bernett behind the plate during the 2021 Women’s College World Series. Bernett was seen smiling and jumping up and down after a game-winning, diving tag by pitcher Odicci Alexander, which went viral. This year, JMU softball cancelled its season early following Bernett’s suicide. Bernett is just one of the five NCAA Division I athletes who have committed suicide in the past three months. Super Bowl 54 marked the 100th year of the National Football League, as well as other milestones:  The Kansas City Chiefs won their first Super Bowl in 50 years, triumphing over the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20. This was the first superbowl Chief’s head coach Andy Reid won after over 21 years as a head coach, and the Chief’s star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, also became the youngest player in NFL history to win MVP and a Super Bowl.

Lacrosse Playoff Recap

When Jeff Bruner scored a goal on Wednesday night, May 23rd and tied the game at 6-6 with 8:50 left in the 4th quarter, the Howard fan section at Paint Branch High school erupted. Severna Park had won the previous three Maryland 4a lacrosse state championships and were heavy favorites over the Howard Lions in this years championship. This wasn’t the only game that the Lions were underdogs however, and they battled throughout the playoffs to get to the championship game.

Summer Fitness Guide

March Madness, the season of busted brackets and iconic upsets, is finally here. The 64 team bracket has been filled and people have made their picks. CBSSports’ Final Four picks are Tennessee (2 seed) vs. North Carolina (1 seed) and Gonzaga (1 seed) vs. Duke (1 seed). Duke is the world’s top pick to win the championship as they are a powerful team with freshman Zion Williamson, who has been the talk of college basketball this season. They are expected to go far in the tournament this year along with the other 1 seeds (Gonzaga, North Carolina, and Virginia). Three of the four 1 seeds are ACC teams.

     After a long wait, the start of the regular season is just around the corner. The first official day of the regular season will be March 28th, when all 30 teams will play their season opener. March 28th will be the earliest opening day in baseball history.
    Unsurprisingly, the three teams expected to finish top three are the Houston Astros, New York Yankees, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Astros won the World Series two seasons ago and won 103 games last season. The Yankees made it to the World Series last year and are looking for a comeback this season.

The Rise of Russell Westbrook

   These last couple years have been some of Russell Westbrook’s best career seasons. He has set records, helped his team in the playoffs, and won an NBA MVP award. He’s proving to be a hall of fame player, but how’d he get here?
Russell Westbrook entered the league when he was drafted fourth overall in the 2008 draft to the Seattle Supersonics. Six days after being drafted, the team relocated to Oklahoma City. He went to UCLA, and put up not so great numbers in college, averaging 8.3 points per game in his two years there. When he entered the league in his first year at just twenty years old, he averaged 15.3 points per game.

“Win a state title, I mean, that’s the ultimate goal for me,” said Coach Creighton on his plan for this year’s Boys Lacrosse season. This year's team is young and carries much potential, but will have to mature fast if they want to have a chance at a title. The team had 18 seniors graduate last year, so there are a lot of new faces, with “only three or four returning guys” said team captain Ben Stephanos.

Halftime Controversy

Maroon 5 was the featured performer at the LIII Super Bowl Halftime Show in Atlanta on February 2, 2019.  While the championship itself is consistently one of the most viewed sporting events of the year, for many people the game takes a backseat to the halftime performance. In 2017, Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl performance had 6 million more viewers than the game itself.

Ravens Recap

         While the Ravens’ season has already ended, there’s no doubt it gave fans a glimpse of hope with what’s to come. This Ravens team is different than the last few seasons, and that’s something to be excited about.    The Ravens haven’t been in the playoffs since the 2014 season, when they beat the Steelers in the Wild Card round, but ended up losing to the Patriots in the Divisional round, just before the Deflategate allegations came up. (Coincidence? Probably not.) After not making the playoffs for three seasons, they finally made it this season.

Winter Sports Preview

     After a successful fall season, the Howard Lions are ready to thrive once again. Howard’s winter sport season is starting and our athletes are anticipating another great season. The teams that are gearing up to play are girls and boys basketball, hockey, track, cheer, and wrestling.
     Varsity wrestler Shayan Kassiri anticipates, “This year, a lot of the guys have been working hard to prepare for the season.”  The team expects to be one of the top 6 teams this year. Trey Mitchell, another good wrestler, says, “Communication as a team might be a challenge for us.” He also said, “I am excited to go to states.”

Fall Sports Summary

Howard Lions are finishing the fall sports season strong. It is no surprise that Howard continued to dominate this season. Like previous years, the Lions excelled in football with a record of 8-2. Some notable players this season include Jerry O'Neil on varsity football and Jeff Bruner on varsity soccer.

The football team was virtually undefeated, with a single loss to Glenelg until playoffs, where the team lost to Mervo 48-21. The team is excited about its achievements and looking forward to next season.

2018 World Series Faceoff

The Fall Classic has come and gone this year, as the Dodgers and Red Sox battled in a best of seven series to decide the 2018 MLB World Champions.
That’s right, the Dodgers were back in the World Series after falling to the Astros in game seven of last year. The Dodgers came back better than ever after picking up arguably the best shortstop in baseball midway through the season, Manny Machado. Since acquiring Manny, the Dodgers battled ‘till the end through their division and finished in first place, 21 games above .500. Struggling in the beginning of the season with many injuries, the Dodgers returned to full form in the postseason, taking care of the Atlanta Braves and top team in the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers, to get to the World Series.

     In past years, it has been obvious that our school is one of the best at sports, from football to cross country, and everything in between. So far it looks like this season will be no different, as all of our fall sports continue to impress and surprise other schools.
The Howard football team looks like it will be dominant yet again. With a record of 3-1 and their only loss being to Glenelg, the Lions continue to be one of the best teams in Howard County. The Lions have many dominant senior players including Jerry O’Neill, Aidan O’Connor, and Devon Dawkins. Some of Howard’s hardest competitors will be Glenelg and Long Reach.

Howard's Homecoming Game

     On a warm Friday night in September, the Howard Lions extended their winning streak to three with a dominating defensive performance against the River Hill Hawks. Since this was the homecoming game, expectations, and therefore turnout, was high. The bleachers on both sides were packed, with people from Howard even having to move over to to the guest side just to find a seat. The team definitely did not disappoint, beating River Hill 22-7.

     Jerry O’Neill is a senior and is highly involved in the athletic community at Howard High School. O’Neill is the starting third baseman for the varsity baseball team and the starting quarterback for the varsity football team. He helped the baseball team to win the Maryland 4a State Championship this year and plans to do the same with football, being one of the captains of the team. As a multisport athlete, O’Neill plans to lead Howard football to a fifth straight county and regional title this year, and baseball to another state championship.
