After their season was cut short, the Howard High boys lacrosse team connected through a virtual call on April 27 to honor the team’s graduating seniors.
Head coach Coach Creighton opened by expressing his pride at the team’s performance, and the excellent job the seniors did setting examples for the younger players. One by one, the seniors' names were called.
Captain Ethan Mitchell, a midfielder, cited the team’s 2019 playoff run to get to the Maryland 4A state championship and his first Lions pride lacrosse camp with Coach Creighton as his favorite memories. Mitchell will attend Hampton University, where he will pursue a major in finance, as well as play on the lacrosse team.
Captain midfielder Jeff Bruner will attend Salisbury University to play lacrosse and major in business administration. His favorite lacrosse memory is the regional championship game against Urbana, but also being in the locker room every day with the boys.
Captain defender Scott Trout’s favorite memory is his game-saving deflection from X (behind the goal) against Catonsville last year, preserving the team’s chance to make the playoffs. Next year, Trout will attend Howard Community College to continue playing lacrosse.
Goalie and defender Seth Trout’s favorite memory is the whole 2019 season. “What we went through that year was the best thing that I have ever gone through. The season was full of ups and downs, but in the end we came together as a group of brothers and made an awesome playoff run to the state championships,” he said.
Midfielder Colin Hunter will attend Penn State Berks next year, and plans to transfer to Penn State after two years to major in business management. His favorite memory is beating Urbana to go to the 2019 semi-finals.
Defender Cole Carter’s favorite memory was also the Urbana game. He will attend Stevenson University to continue his athletic career and major in computer science.
Attackman Chandler Grimes recently transferred from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in PG county, and played for Howard for only a couple months. His favorite memory is traveling to Tennessee with his travel team for a tournament that they won. He will attend Bridgewater College next year.
Midfielder Quinn Dunnigan played three years of varsity tennis prior to joining the lacrosse team his senior year.. His favorite memory is getting “broke,” or juked out by Max Bruno. He will be attending Virginia tech and major in technology.
Attackman Colin Sutch’s favorite memory is winning the regional game against Urbana. He will attend Salisbury University and major in business.
Midfielder Ryan Taylor’s favorite memory is going to the state lacrosse championship in 2019; he will be attending the University of Tennessee and will major in business analytics.
Defender Tyler Guerke’s favorite memory is morning workout shenanigans and the entire 2019 playoff push. Guerke will attend James Madison University on an ROTC scholarship, and plans to major in intelligence analysis and a minor in military science. He hopes to serve the country in the army after graduating.
Defender Kyle Perry said his favorite memory is the 2019 state championship game. He will attend Salisbury University to major in business administration and marketing, with a minor in history.
CJ Burns, a midfielder, cited storming the field after beating Urbana in the 2019 playoffs as his favorite memory. Burns will attend Howard Community College next year, and plans to play lacrosse.
Midfielder Will Drnach’s favorite memory is also the Urbana game. He will attend the University of Maryland and will major in golf course management.
After the seniors were announced, the coaches and seniors gave their final words. The coaches talked about how the team played strongly together through the shortened season, and the captains thanked their coaches and teammates for being as tight-knit as brothers. Tears were shed with the final words about the seniors' last times playing as Lions.
Ending on an inspiring note, Coach Crieghton said that “this may be the end of the season but it is not a goodbye.”
