Senior Spotlight: Gabby Scott
Bobby Smith '22 Staff Writer
Senior Gabby Scott is a well known student at Howard High school for her athletic feats. She has been a key component to the girls basketball team, where she has been playing varsity since her freshman year. The basketball team has been outstanding through Scott’s high school experience. In 2020, the team went 25-0. This past season, they were undefeated until the 3A State Championship game, which they lost to Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. Additionally, the Howard Girls Basketball team was the Baltimore Sun’s Howard County Program of the Decade. Scott was voted best athlete by students for the senior superlatives. Next year, she’ll be attending and playing basketball at Towson University, a Division I school, on a full-ride scholarship.
Bobby Smith (BS): So, question number one, when did you begin playing basketball?
Gabby Scott (GS): Well, I began in second grade, but I’ve been playing as long as I can remember, you know, with my family and everything for a very long time.
BS: What sparked your interest in it?
GS: Well, my family was always playing it, so I guess I just kinda got taken into it, but I’ll always enjoy sports and enjoy basketball.
BS: How has your athletic career progressed throughout high school?
GS: Well, I played basketball and soccer my freshman year and sophomore year, and then I only played basketball my senior year because in junior year it got canceled. But it’s progressed well and turned into scholarships, so I’m pretty happy with it.
BS: What’s one word that you would use to describe the team’s season and why?
GS: Um… probably being proud of the team, we accomplished a lot and I’m super grateful for them.
BS: So I guess you could say “pride.”
GS: Yeah.
BS: Like Howard High School’s motto.
GS: Yeah.
BS: What’s your favorite memory of basketball?
GS: There’s too many to choose from, but honestly just going to eat with the team and hanging out with the team, so there’s too many to choose from.
BS: What advice do you have for new coming players?
GS: For high school, I just say to not be nervous and have your confidence. It’s very different from other sports so just don’t be nervous and have confidence.
BS: Who has helped you the most… in your journey throughout basketball, I guess?
GS: Definitely my family, my dad really. He’s the one that’s always helped me and is always there for me, so definitely my father.
BS: I’d like to talk about the Howard-Poly game at UMD because that was really cool, even if you guys did lose.
GS: Mhm.
BS: It was just cool being there and watching you guys play.
GS: Yeah.
BS: Would you like to talk about it? Do you have anything to say about it?
GS: Yeah, I mean, it’s amazing. We were 44 and 1, uh, I have 64 and 4 on my whole career at Howard, which is very impressive, credit to Coach Scott and all of the teams that we got. Poly was a great match for us, I feel like it was a good challenge for us and it’s unfortunate that we did lose, but it was awesome playing at UMD, which is a great experience for all of us, a learning experience, and it was amazing.
BS: What kind of legacy do you think you left on Howard Basketball.
GS: Um… I’m not sure. I think that’s up for other people to decide. I mean, it’s pretty good, but I think that’s up for other people to decide.
