A Look into Howard Baseball & Softball

The Howard Lion’s boys baseball and girls softball teams are off to a good start this season. The boys are coming off a 4A Regional Championship win, and the girls are eager and hungry to get back on track. The boys’ top returners are seniors Jake Keller, Cameron Vela and Ethan Juico. The softball team is a fairly young team, but is led by seniors Kaylee Delossantos, Morghan Gross, Belle Larson, Lily Soler, Maddie Coleman and Erin Gorshboth.
The first game for the softball and baseball teams was on March 21st against Long Reach, in which both teams beat the Lightning. The girls won 6-1 with star senior pitcher Maddie Coleman on the mound. Coleman ended up striking out 16 batters. Howard Baseball’s senior Ethan Juico had a walk-off single to claim the 5-4 win.
Expectations are high for the Lady Lions this year with Division I commit Maddie Coleman on the mound. Sophomore Katie Green will also be on the mound again this year and has had an impressive start to the season. On March 30, Howard played Hammond and Green struck out 12 batters. Sophomore Jordan Howell hit a walk-off three-run homerun to finish the game. Second baseman and catcher Morghan Gross stated, “My expectations for this season are to be a strong team all together and make sure we play our hardest on and off the field, even during practice.”
The Baltimore Sun’s Softball Preseason Top 15 ranked Howard Softball seventh. Gross added, “I believe Reservoir will be the hardest competition for us.” Reservoir was ranked fourth by the Baltimore Sun. Howard plays Reservoir on April 22 and the 27th.
Howard Baseball had 13 seniors leave last season, so returning back to premiere play will be difficult. Senior third baseman and pitcher Cameron Vela stated, “I want to be a leader for the younger guys on this team and also make an all-county for my position. As a team, our goal is to get better every game and practice as we have.” The returning seniors also added their expectations were to make a state run, which starts with having a strong regular season and finishing high in the county standings.
There are a lot of new additions to the baseball team including sophomores Hunter Hilte, Sean Dawes and Jeremy Hahn. Additionally, there are two freshmen that are a part of the lineup: JT Stanyard and Dylan Abrahams. “We need to work on our defense behind the pitcher. Once we do that, we’ll be able to win a lot more games,” Dawes stated.
Howard High School’s softball and baseball teams will definitely be interesting to watch. The last game of the season for both teams will be on May 6, 2022 at 4:00 at home against Wilde Lake High School. The 3A Maryland State Playoffs will start shortly after the end of the season.
