Q: What inspired you to start running? A: I started running to train for soccer, but once I got cut from soccer freshman year, running became my passion. Q: How would you describe what running means to you? A: Running is something that means a lot to me, and it’s a way to achieve a lot while gaining friends and having fun. Q: What does it feel like to train so hard and cross that finish line? A: Training is really hard, especially in workouts, but the more it hurts, the better you are getting. Crossing the finish line feels relieving and great when you race well. Q: Has COVID made training or competitions harder this year or has everything been smooth sailing as usual? A: Training has been mostly the same, we just had been doing it outside of school. Competition has been a lot harder to get through because in order to race indoor track we have to go to Virginia Beach, which is a long drive. Q: Are there any goals that you wish to hit by the end of this season? A: In cross country, a goal I have is for Howard to win the county championship. For track, I want to try and improve my times even more and obtain school records. Q: Who are coaches or running idols that have helped you get to this point? A: I have a trainer outside of school who’s a former Olympian, Sanjay Ayre. He helped me a lot when I first started running and still gives me a lot of advice. I also have Coach Dickerson and Mack at Howard who really helped bring me to the next level with workouts and runs. Q: What is your weekly routine to get ready for a meet? A: Well, in the beginning of the week I normally have a workout that’s not that strenuous. The other days are mostly easy runs or extremely light workouts. Three days before, I normally try to get mentally prepared and picture how I want to run the race. Closer to the meet, I try to eat pasta for carbs which are good for running. A big part of the race is being mentally prepared, so I focus on that a lot in the days before the meet. |
