Senior Spotlight: Viola Yu
Shenell Logan '23 Staff Writer
Shenell Logan (SL): What do you think is the biggest contributing factor to the success you’ve had academically?
Viola Yu (VY): I think the biggest contributing factor was my motivation - I kind of went into high school knowing what I wanted to do and the actions I needed to take to succeed.
SL: Who supported you the most academically?
VY: My friends, specifically Nithya Nuvala [another senior at Howard].
SL: What was the hardest part of high school for you? Why and how did you overcome that to perform so well in school?
VY: The hardest part was fixing my mindset to stop focusing solely on grades and work towards actually understanding the subject.
SL: What was the easiest part of high school for you?
VY: Honestly, academics up to this year (oopsies senioritis).
SL: Would you say that you had a lot of support from your teachers? If not, do you feel like you could have used more support from them?
VY: I had the exact amount of support that I needed, but it wasn’t a lot. However, I think the amount of support I received was perfect in making me more independent and confident in my own skills, if that makes sense.
SL: Do you have any advice for freshmen who want to achieve academic success?
VY: To freshmen - try out new things and don’t be afraid to ask questions and talk to your teachers.
SL: If you could change one thing you did in high school, would you? If so, what would you change?
VY: I wouldn’t take such a crazy senior year schedule.
SL: What was your favorite class that you’ve taken in high school?
VY: I liked a lot of classes so I can’t pick one - Calc AB and Calc BC were probably among my favorites though.
