Video Games for the Holidays
Wesley Ding '23 Staff Writer
There are countless video games that people enjoy playing during the holidays. Especially during the holidays when people are together, these games are great picks for anyone looking for a way to hang out with friends or family. The games on this list either have holiday-themed events/sales, holiday spirit, winter-based content, or all of the above. People don’t have to play just for the holiday events; there’s no reason not to play video games just for fun!
1. Brawlhalla
Brawlhalla is a fighting game made by Blue Mammoth Games and Ubisoft. It can be played on many different platforms, including Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, PC/Steam, XBox One and X|S, as well as PlayStation Four and Five. All platforms have a crossplay/multiplayer feature, allowing up to eight players at a time. This gives players a wide variety of devices to choose from. This vast crossplay feature can be used to hang out with friends during the holidays.
2. Rocket LeagueRocket League is a popular soccer game that was developed by Psyonix. Rather than an in-game soccer player, it has the interesting mechanic of using vehicles to hit the soccer ball. As the name suggests, players can drive the vehicles at the speed of rockets, changing the whole concept of soccer. It’s definitely worth a try for those that are energetic and want to bring up the holiday spirit.
3. League of Legends
League of Legends is a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game that was created by Riot Games, the developer of Valorant and TFT as well as the producer of the Netflix show Arcane. League of Legends is currently one of the most popular games in America. Although it doesn't have as much winter-themed content, it's still extremely fun to play, with over 150 playable characters, each one having unlockable skins (customizations). It is playable on Windows and Mac computers. Another version of it is available on mobile devices, although the gameplay of the mobile version is generally easier and games don't last as long. Regardless of the player's preference, League of Legends is a very fun game to play and is great to spend time on over the holidays.
4. State of Survival
As the name implies, State of Survival is a survival-based strategy game developed by KingsGroup Holdings. The goal of the game is to work with other players to build a defense and survive a zombie apocalypse. Players can build fortresses and arm themselves with various firearms to protect themselves. Although this game may feature some intense content for newer players, this is a game that could definitely be played with friends over the holidays.

5. Raid Shadow Legends
Developed by Plarium Games, Raid Shadow Legends is a fantasy MMORPG game that was originally a mobile game, but soon expanded to Microsoft Windows. The graphics and visuals are very realistic, and there are hundreds of playable characters to choose from. Players battle various enemies, ranging from humanoids to gigantic monsters. Raid Shadow Legends also has promo codes as well as holiday specials, so players can enjoy the game itself while taking part in the holiday-themed events. |
6. Warframe
Warframe was developed by Digital Extremes and Panic Button Games. It is classified as multiple genres, including action, online multiplayer and third-person shooter. Players can duel each other or fight against in-game enemies. It has also had special holiday content in the past, so players can anticipate another winter sale this year.

7. Clash Royale
Clash Royale is a strategy game developed by Supercell. Although it’s old, it has recently become popular again among Howard High students. To add to that, the game recently had a major update that introduced a new rarity of cards, outclassing the legendaries. Clash Royale recently had a “Slash Royale” event that greatly reduced the price of upgrading cards, as well as an easier way to get gold. There is also a twelve-day event where players can claim a free gift every day for twelve days. The highest arena, the Legendary Arena, has been redesigned to have a more winter-themed appearance. Players can look forward to these specials and possibly some other winter-themed features. Personally, I'm really hoping that they do a winter sale or event, which will undoubtedly raise the holiday spirit. |
8. Genshin Impact
Lastly, Genshin Impact is a role-playing game developed by MiHoYo. It is a very popular game in the US and the scenery is very beautiful. Apart from the fact that there are missions requiring combat, the anime-inspired graphics as well as the relaxing background music will put the stressed at ease. Because of the combat missions, this game could also work for people who want a more energetic gameplay. Some of the bosses are extremely hard to beat, and the sense of achievement after beating one is amazing. The events leading up to one of the first major fights takes place on a mountain with snow and freezing weather, which is timely for newer players like myself. Either way, it is a great game to play during the holidays.
