Tardy Table

The tardy table is stationed in the lobby, which is an area at the main entrance where car-rider students wait for their rides after school. In the morning, students that arrive late go to the tardy table to check in with an administrator. The normal tardy time is 7:25, but this time has often been extended because of traffic. However, this policy is ending on April 4th, and students will be responsible for their tardiness even if it’s because of traffic. Students will be expected to arrive on time (still at 7:25) by then. There was a five minute grace period in February, but right now in March, students are only given a three minute grace period after 7:25. The grace period will be entirely removed starting on April 4th. When asked about removing the grace period, senior Lillian Cisna said, “Absolutely not, they should not remove the grace period, especially with how much traffic there is in the morning.”
The administrators say that since students are over halfway through the school year, they should be able to take the traffic into account. Recently, the administration also wrote an email reminding drivers to avoid making right-hand turns from the center lane, for doing so is very dangerous. It’s advised that students arrive before 7am, when the traffic is light.
The traffic every day is very bad and can almost be compared to that of a city. Cars line up to get to the school entrance, and lines stretch very far into the roads leading to the school. However, the administration still believes that the students should take responsibility for their own tardiness. But with a traffic problem this serious, it’s almost impossible for every student to be on time.
The traffic problem is at its worst from 7:20 to 7:25. It’s best before 7:00, but it’s not a surprise if people cannot make it to school by then. However, the traffic is lighter at any time between 7:00 to 7:20. It is there, but not overwhelming; students can probably make it in about 20 minutes if they leave the house at around 7:00.
Recently, there have been several accidents outside the school parking lot. A recent accident was particularly serious, with one of the vehicles getting completely knocked off the road. Although accidents like these may not affect the tardy table directly, it further delays the already slow traffic, which has an impact on arriving students.
