Step Team Season

With the abrupt end to the school year, Howard High’s Legacy Step Team concluded another wonderful season. Highlights from the year included performances at basketball games, the Black History Month assembly, the Variety Show and Laurel Woods Elementary.
Freshman Jaela Coleman identified the Variety Show as her favorite performance because “it was our first ever performance together, as a team, it was really fun to do.”
By spending time together, the team built a bond just practices and performances. For freshman Nyshay “Shay” Gordon, friendships with her teammates were the most significant part of the experience. “I feel like I can connect with people who understand how passionate I am about topics other than Step,” she said. Gordon also credits Step Team with helping her become more self-confident.
One of the saddest parts of the season’s conclusion is seeing seniors leave. Although the team had only a handful of seniors members, they were an integral part of the team.
This important role was especially true of De’Asia Cole, one of the team captains. Cole’s co-captain Carmen Dove said that “it’s just really sad because she is a big contributor to the team.” Coleman, along with Kennedy Wright, noted that “the team is going to be very different without [Cole].”
Despite these sad goodbyes, the girls are still looking forward to next season. Dove is excited to see new freshmen tryout for the team.
Wright encouraged those looking for an experience different from that of a sports team to join. “It’s not that hard, other teams want you to run a mile. We just want you to practice the routines, and if you do, there's a great chance you’ll make it and you’ll also join a new sisterhood,” she said.
