School Year Wrap

The 2021-2022 school year was an action-packed year. The first year back after an isolating virtual school experience was bound to be interesting, and this year was anything but boring. The year started off in the midst of COVID, with everyone readjusting to being in school in person. Social distancing and masks became a part of a normal school day.
While the Howard varsity football team didn’t win many games during their season, students still enjoyed the games. They showed up to support the Howard Lions right up to the last game, which led into the Homecoming dance the following day. Howard’s theater department put on two plays this fall, one being a joint production of Phantom of the Opera with Long Reach’s theater department, and one solo production of The Addams Family. Unfortunately, the auditorium’s ceiling began to fall down, causing any further productions to be held at neighboring schools or with limited space on Howard’s stage.
The weeks leading up to winter break saw a rise in COVID cases, causing school events such as concerts and winterfest to be canceled. As spring approached, the school felt it was safe to reinstate events. Howard High School got to see the girls’ basketball team make it all the way to states this year. While the Lions lost the game, they had an amazing season and many students attended the games.
With spring came baseball, softball, and lacrosse games. Howard High students once again showed up to support their friends and peers at both home and away games. Howard High School even had two dances! The senior midyear was on March 18, a seniors-only dance, and prom was on May 13, which was for juniors and seniors, although underclassmen could come if they were invited.
Throughout the year, Howard High School tried its best to give its students a year worth remembering. Whether it was sports games, spirit weeks (including one for our principal’s birthday) or school dances, everyone made memories this year. Senior Olivia Morgan said, “My favorite school event was definitely all the spirit days. I think they really brought people together and made the school more of a community.” Junior Nyssa Vilchis says her favorite event was “definitely prom. I loved all the fun things leading up to it, and I loved hanging out with my friends.” Both Morgan and Vilchis agreed that this year brought the school together as a community, especially after online school last year.
