It is almost that time of year when seniors become freshmen again! Although they will be at the bottom of the food chain, exciting times are coming for our seniors. Move in day– typically in the middle to late of August – is coming up and in preparation, seniors need to start buying things for their dorms such as organization tools and other necessities like a Keurig, an instant coffee maker. Listed below are a few dorm room essentials to help out in college:
Fan: around $20
Although fans can be big and bulky they are a necessity even if your dorm is air conditioned. College dorms are known for having either terrible or no AC at all, and you will thank yourself later if you bring a fan.

Water Filter: around $30 to $35
Seniors, you’re probably well accommodated with your at home fridge’s automatic water filter. Unfortunately, college dorm rooms do not have the priority of hosting a $3,000, state of the art refrigerator. Buying a water filter, such as the well known Brita Water Filter, allows you to have access to clean water in your own dorm room, with minimal hassle. |
Keurig: $90 for mini and $140 for classic
As everyone knows, coffee is a necessity in college for a little pick me up or to help one stay up to study (well, hopefully). Regardless if you drink coffee or tea, having a Keurig or any form of an at home coffee maker will save your sanity and your wallet. According to Livia Carmody, alum from Howard High School who now goes to RPI, “ I would say my most treasured possession is my Keurig.”
Storage compartments: prices vary depending on amount of storage compartments bought
Dorm rooms are not that spacious, and definitely do not come with enough storage space to store all of your belongings and secret midnight snacks, so storage compartments and other organizational tools will become a necessity. Although it may sound boring to purchase, they can be used to decorate your room while keeping it organized. In addition, staying organized in college will help you out so much when it comes to studying and keeping a peaceful state of mind.
Shower essentials: shower caddies range from $5 to $25 and shower shoes vary depending on brand and type
Listen, college dorm room bathrooms have a 9 in 10 chance of being absolutely revolting. Purchasing a shower caddy and shower shoes can help make this experience a little less disgusting. A shower caddy will allow you to carry all your bathing products in one container, which may seem simple, but will greatly reduce the hassle of struggling to carry each product as it slips through your arms. Shower shoes are an absolute essential; they protect your feet from the unknown bacteria and fungus that is likely lurking in the dorm shower.

Bed risers: around $20
You may be surprised to hear, but 10 inch by 16 inch college dorm rooms do not have the space to store your entire at home closet, at least not with proper organization. Bed risers, thankfully, come to the rescue. They simply lift your mattress up a few inches which allows for storage under your bed, enabling you to bring half of your closet instead of a lowly fourth of it. It’s worth noting that some colleges require you to rent bed risers, so make sure to check with your university's dorm rules before purchasing your own. |
Outlet extension: around $10
Technology has taken over our everyday lives, so as future college students, you seniors must be prepared to charge all of your electronics before class everyday. Even though the amount of technology used by one college student has increased over the years, the amount of available outlets in a dorm has unfortunately not increased with the former. To evade the unfortunate event of not having enough charger space, an outlet extension would be useful to charge multiple devices at once; anywhere from a computer to a hair dryer.

Hanging Shoe Organizer: around $10
Out of all the items brought from home to college, shoes have got to be the most chunky and difficult to store in close quarters. A perfect way to store them- that also looks good- is a hanging organizer in your dorm's closet, which can be used to store ALL sorts of shoes from hiking boots to tennis shoes. In addition, these organizers usually have more room than shoes that a college student owns, so they are also perfect for storing other necessities. |
Collapsible Laundry Basket: around $20
We’ll say it once and we’ll say it again; dorm rooms are tiny. A laundry basket is not going to fit in your dorm, but a collapsible one will! No one wants to be carrying their clothes down to the laundry room and have their underwear slip out of their arms onto the floor; that would be embarrassing. Investing in a collapsible laundry basket is a surefire way to avoid this embarrassing situation. |
We understand that you're going to become a broke college student, so no need to fear all of these dorm room essentials can be found at any Walmart, Target, or you can get it shipped to your house from Amazon.
