For senior Brady Scott, it’s not about the followers. It’s about the photos. “When people repost my stuff on their stories it gives me a feeling of happiness that I don't know how to describe. It’s just a simple reshare and stuff but, it really means a lot that people are sharing my stuff,” says Scott.
Not everyone knows Brady Scott, but most are familiar with his expressive photos. Since freshman year, Scott has been developing his photography skills.
Scott has developed an amazing relationship with Howard High’s cross country and track team along with the football team. On Friday nights during football season, you could find him on the field capturing every moment from the Lions’ games. “Even though I am a photographer, like I don’t participate in the athletic activities that the sport involves, I am still able to feel a part of the team and that is what is so special about it…I loved being able to spend time with these people and travel with them, even though I was just taking pictures and not participating in the events.” Scott states.
Scott explains what the key is to good sports photography: “You definitely always want to show emotion in a photo or else people are going to look at it and think nothing of it.” Om Maryankandy, an aspiring photographer, recalls what Scott has taught him, “The key to taking a powerful photo is to capture emotions! Candid photography can tell many stories, it is truly beautiful how one photo can tell so much.”
Although he photographs many different sports, Scott enjoys cross country and track the most. “I just really like photographing in the beginning of the races and then the end because it really shows like a lot of emotion… that’s a really wholesome thing,” Scott states. Scott is most proud of the photos he’s taken at the Maryland Cross Country Invitational of senior Joey Raudabaugh at the finish line. “I literally ran up a hill to get this shot… I stood right in the middle of the lane of where he finished and I got that shot and all you can see is the crowd looking down and cheering back on him,” Scott explains.

Scott’s enthusiasm has inspired others to try photography. Maryankandy began posting his own photos on his Instagram account @om_shoots_stuff. Scott suggested that Maryankandy take photos at the 2021 Cross Country Regionals. Maryankandy explains, “I showed Brady the pictures I took and he was impressed and said I should create an Instagram page for my photography, and I did just that. Everytime I post photos, he is always there to hype me up and help my account grow.” For Maryankandy’s birthday, Scott created a book with his favorite photos along with tips about photography. Maryankandy’s favorite tip? Less details = more interesting composition.
This year, Scott had an opportunity to work with MileSplit, a national website that covers high school track and cross country. While he enjoyed the experience, and was offered other jobs, he felt like his creativity was stifled. “I had to do specific things and capture this and that… I just felt like that it was taking away the creative aspect of photography which is something I value so much.”
Scott plans to go to Howard Community College and then transfer to a university. Scott’s ultimate goal is to one day “be on the Ravens field, taking photos of those football players because that would be such a thrill to do.”
According to Maryankandy, Scott is such an outstanding photographer because of his passion and commitment, explaining, “Brady has something most other photographers lack: passion. It is extremely important when it comes to creating.”
