It is almost every student's favorite time of the year: summer break! Along with the new found free time that comes with summer, hot weather and intense humidity come as well. There are also various events that occur during this time, such as parades, festivals and concerts, where it is important to consider the weather before creating an outfit.
The beach is always a popular spot during the summer season, so preparing for this is an absolute necessity. It’s important to note that sun burns and harsh tan lines are never cute, so don’t forget SPF. Accessories such as beach hats, sunglasses and cover ups not only look stylish but can be used as sun protection as well. Nowadays beachwear is more for pictures than swimming, so the more, the better. Depending on the weather, my typical beach day outfit is either a bright sundress put on top of my bathing suit or a light t-shirt paired with denim shorts and sandals. No one’s a fan of sandy hair, so tying long hair up in a bun is a must.
When it comes to cover ups, knit dress cover ups are super cute and loose to put over bathing suits. You can never go wrong with linen pants and t-shirts as well. Personally, when I just plan on swimming I prefer two piece cover up sets so it’s easier to take on and off. On the other hand, when my beach day is full of other activities, loose shorts and a button down shirt is not only cute, but comfy as well.
This season, it’s important to go back to the classics with solid one pieces and patterned bikini sets. The high waisted one pieces are made to flatter all body types and accent curves. My favorite one piece bathing suit looks are the black, white and brown one pieces with a high waist bottom accessorized with body jewelry, sunglasses and a floppy hat.
Fast clothing lines such as Shein have three piece sets, neon colors and high waist swimsuits trending. Versatile string bikini sets took social media by storm last summer and are here to stay this season as well. The string tops popularity comes from the variety of ways to wear it. Personally, I prefer bright colored swimsuits to match the summer vibe and feel versetial string tops in neon colors are a must have.
Styling a summer ensemble means going back to the basics: denim shorts (but not jorts), tank tops and graphic tees. Anything can be fashionable when styled correctly, even the simplest of items. Let’s begin with denim. Personally, I am never a fan of “short-season” for various reasons, but when the weather is as warm as it is here in Maryland, it is nearly impossible to avoid it. Finding a good quality pair of denim shorts that fit your body type is essential to your comfort this summer. Without it, you will be constantly shifting and scratching and even worse, chafing. That being said, it is not easy to find one. The only way to do this is to try different styles and see what works best for you. Some brands that I would recommend looking into are Levis (if you find a pair that fits you, you can find a pair almost anywhere), Abercrombie and Fitch (typically hold many new, in trend styles) and American Eagle (have both stretchy denim and classic, firm denim). Do not be scared to wear longer shorts! They are coming back into style in a way that is almost reminiscent of a barbeque dad.
Sweatshorts is a fine option if you are someone who likes a little bit more of an athleisure style. Another style is linen shorts, which are the perfect short to wear to any brunch or beachside dinner. Fun fact: linen shorts are the shorts to wear when summering in a European country. Most European countries believe denim shorts to be too informal and improper.
The last thing to consider when choosing an everyday outfit is the tops. Target offers simple $5 tees in nearly every color. You can also get them in multiple styles, cropped, oversized or right on the hip. They also have the option of tank tops and long sleeves for this same, small price. This allows for personal preference in each top. Not only are these tops an affordable option, they are also simple and easy to pair with any sort of short. These can also easily be dressed up or down. Target is also a great option for jewelry. Adding jewelry and belts to these simple outfits enables personality to protrude from any outfit. Shoes are also very important for the personalization of an outfit, but all that information can be found in the shoes edition of fashion in review (found on lions-tale.weebly.com).
For those of you who prefer dresses and skirts to tees and shorts, there is a simple way to style these. Since a dress is an entire outfit, the only thing to really consider is the shoes and accessories. My favorite style of dresses for this upcoming season is something more flowy and beachy as well as any dress that has a vintage feel to it. Vintage feel does not necessarily mean getting a dress from your grandma's closet, but it does mean going to any thrift store or consignment store. You never know what you can find at these stores and they are also much more affordable than buying first-hand. Finally, I love slip dresses and I think that they are going to be a big trend this summer. They are timeless and super easy to layer with, a basic tee underneath (perhaps one of Target’s $5 basics) or an oversized jacket on top. Any dress can be worn with tights when the weather gets too chilly, however, I doubt that this will be the case with Maryland’s unbearable heat and humidity. Dresses can be worn anywhere and everywhere, I recommend everyone buys one to try out this summer, especially since they will be a massive trend this year.
