Euphoria Review

The show Euphoria has become a national hit ever since it ran on HBO max for the first time on June 16, 2019. The series follows a group of teenagers through their experiences of trauma, identity and relationships. Although the show brings up a lot of distressing topics like drugs, abuse and sex, teenage viewers seem to enjoy the show for its authenticity. Euphoria may not be representative of the average teenage life, but viewers love how it does not refrain from bringing up the very worst.
Euphoria is also a big hit because it always keeps its viewers on their toes with the exciting plot twists and dramatic irony throughout each episode. Not to mention, season two’s episodes come out weekly every Sunday, so anticipation is always high throughout the week. Howard High School junior, Claudia Gabriel, explained, “I watch Euphoria because it’s not like other popular shows and you can never guess what is going to happen in the next episode.”
After each airing, fans love to post about their latest theories and favorite scenes from the newest episode on social media apps like TikTok or Instagram. As a result, a Euphoria loving community has grown where fans can talk freely about the latest controversies as they please.
Season two of Euphoria appears to be a time of growth for all the characters in the show- by either growing out of their shell or the extreme of hitting rock bottom. When asked what character she is most excited to see grow, Gabriel said, “Definitely Fez, I think having Lexi as a love interest could change him. Maybe he’ll stop being involved with dangerous people.”
Although Euphoria has received a lot of love and support, there are still people who wish the show was not as descriptive and graphic especially when it comes to drug use. In addition, parents are skeptical when they see the main character Rue is played by Zendaya, an ex Disney star from the show Shake It Up. The jump from a PG environment like Disney to a show rated TV-MA is huge for Zendaya. Gabriel comments on this by saying, “I think that it shows the versatility of Zendaya’s acting abilities. Already being a well known actress has brought a lot of attention to Euphoria and spreads more awareness for drug addiction. It also shows the hardships in life that won’t be shown in a Disney episode.” Viewer discretion is advised to watch Euphoria, but older fans of Zendaya should consider watching it as well. Not just to enjoy watching Zendaya play a different role, but to also spread awareness of drug abuse and other related topics discussed in the show.
In addition, fans of season one are also wondering if season two has lived up to the hype, and are skeptical to think this season is just as good as the last. Kira Jones, a senior at Howard High School, comments on this by saying, “ I think season two has lived up to its hype, but I did like the first season the most. I think it was more realistic.” Season two appears to be a good second chapter of Euphoria, but like with most popular shows and books, season one had a better plot.
Overall, the show Euphoria is a national hit and for a reason! It is an entertaining show, but it also portrays the realistic life struggles of addiction and identity.
